Our alumni continue to make a mark in various fields, embodying the Lasallian values of excellence, service and lifelong learning. Here’s what some of them have to share about their journey beyond SJIIS.
Visagan, a Theoretical Physics graduate from Durham University, reflects on his time at SJIIS and how it shaped his academic journey.
What do you miss most about SJIIS?
My friends. We try to meet whenever I’m back in Kuala Lumpur, but being spread across the globe makes it challenging.
What do you wish you had known at the start of university?
At Durham, the first year is purely formative and does not count toward your final grade. While it’s important to strive for good performance, I’ve realised that I could have joined or started more societies much earlier.
What course did you take, and how will these skills apply to your future career?
I studied Theoretical Physics and am now pursuing a PhD in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics. The skills I’ve gained are directly applicable, particularly my problem-solving and programming abilities, which will serve me well in scientific research.
Clement shares his perspective on being a Lasallian and his advice for students navigating university life.
What does being a Lasallian mean to you?
To me, being a Lasallian means embodying respect, compassion and integrity in all aspects of life. It’s about striving for excellence, supporting others, and making a positive impact in the community. It’s a commitment to personal growth and helping those around you.”
What advice would you give to current students?
University life is a mix of challenges and opportunities. Embrace the ups and downs, learn from every experience and build meaningful relationships. These years will shape you into a stronger, more resilient individual. Enjoy the journey!
Maria shares how she balanced academics with a passion for the arts, proving that Lasallians excel in more than just their chosen fields.
"Besides my classes, assignments and exams, joining the UCL Stage Crew Society was one of my best decisions. I’ve taken on roles like Production Manager and Lighting Designer for theatre productions, which made my university experience even more fulfilling."
Her journey highlights how Lasallians thrive across disciplines, combining academic excellence with diverse interests.
