Global Legacy
John’s revolutionary approach to education spread throughout France and, following his death in 1719, continued to inspire educational reforms worldwide. He was declared a Saint in 1900 and named Patron Saint of Educators in 1950.
Formally known as the Institut des Frères des Écoles Chrétiennes or The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the De La Salle Brothers are often referred to simply as the Institute.
Foundation and Mission
Established in 1680 by John Baptist de La Salle, the Brothers committed themselves to the education of children from working-class backgrounds and those in poverty. With schools established mainly through community donations, they focused on training teachers dedicated to this mission.
