The Lasallian Formation Camp (LFC) 2025 was held in Sangkhlabhuri, Thailand, from 16 to 21 November 2025.

An annual experiential formation programme, the Lasallian Formation Camp invites sixth-form students to encounter the heart of the Lasallian mission through lived experience. Grounded in Faith, Service, and Community, the programme offers participants direct engagement with Lasallian educational works serving communities on the margins in East Asia, with particular attention to the Last, the Lost, and the Least.

For 2025, thirteen sixth-form students participated—two from Year 13 and eleven Lasallian Scholars from Year 12. They were accompanied by Brother Mico de Leon FSC (Trip Leader), Mr Matthew O’Shea (Deputy Principal of High School), and Ms Lindsay Raggett (English Teacher). Together, students and staff entered a shared space of service, learning, and community.

WE ARE ONE, BUT WE ARE MANY

LFC 2025 was marked by a significant collaboration among Lasallian institutions in Malaysia and Singapore: St. Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia, St. Joseph’s Institution International School Singapore, and St. Joseph’s Institution Independent (Singapore).

Approximately fifty students from the three schools participated, forming a single Lasallian community through collaborative service and intercultural engagement. For many, stepping beyond familiar institutional contexts and working alongside peers from other Lasallian schools brought the global Lasallian mission into sharper focus.

Joe Ng, Lasallian Scholar for Academic Excellence, reflected on this shared identity, noting that the experience made him proud to be Lasallian because of “meeting other schools and realising how much we have in common in terms of Lasallian ethos, school songs and slogans, and a dedication to helping the Last, the Lost & the Least.”

Yu Han, Lasallian Scholar for the Field of Science, echoed this sentiment, sharing: “In our LEDU [Lasallian Education] lessons we are often told about the different La Salle communities across the globe, but I had never realised its significance until this trip… in a world of war, pessimism and darkness, there is a light, a community, in which people still care about the world’s common problems like poverty and lack of education.”

For Joe, this sense of unity was most powerfully felt during a simple shared moment: “Singing the School Rally and We Are Lasallian together with the other two schools on the final night hammered this message home to me about our shared unity, values and understanding. It truly made me feel honoured to be part of this community.”

Aurelia Lee, Lasallian Scholar for the Field of English, similarly reflected on how the experience reshaped her understanding of community, saying, “Being constantly immersed in new culture, ideals, and experiences, it pushed me to see the word ‘community involvement’ in a new light; it isn’t just the act of proactively giving service, but rather also being there with full presence and understanding as one Lasallian family, which truly encompasses the phrase ‘We are One, but We are Many’.”

TO THE POOR WE GIVE OUR SERVICE TO BRIGHTEN UP THEIR DAY

Throughout the camp, students engaged fully in a range of service-learning experiences made possible through close collaboration with our community partners: the De La Salle Brothers of Thailand, La Salle Sangkhlabhuri Primary School, La Salle Bamboo School, and Blue Sky House.

Students built mushroom huts, painted and installed bamboo fencing, taught English and Mathematics, and spent time with children through games, songs, and shared meals. They managed their own budgets, purchased and distributed ice cream to approximately 400 students, and trekked for over an hour to visit villages where some La Salle Sangkhabhuri students live. Between structured activities were countless unplanned moments—conversations, laughter, fatigue, and quiet reflection—that shaped the deeper learning of the experience.

Central to this learning was an understanding of service as reciprocal. Kayden Chow, Lasallian Scholar for Community and Service, reflected, “My most striking memory would have to be the multitude of genuine smiles I saw not only on the faces of my peers and chaperones, but also on the faces of our beneficiaries.” He continued, “Although they may not have offered us physical gifts, the intangible gift of their willingness to accept us as their friends and treat us as one of their own was far better and more meaningful.”

Manaal Atik, Lasallian Scholar for Leadership, similarly articulated the mutual nature of service: “In those fleeting exchanges, I realised that the people we meet are not simply beneficiaries of our service, but our equals and friends… It reinforced a core Lasallian belief that education and service are rooted in human connection. We do not transform others without being transformed ourselves.”

TODAY THE NEED REMAINS, FOR MEN LIKE DE LA SALLE

Beyond service, the camp fostered personal growth through reflection, adaptability, and shared responsibility. Daily reflection sessions encouraged students to examine their values, assumptions, and sense of purpose, helping them connect their experiences to their identity. Many also came to recognise the importance of communication shaped by sincerity and humility, particularly because most of the people they encountered had limited proficiency in English.

Jenny Wu, Lasallian Scholar for the Field of Arts, reflected, “I learned to communicate without relying on language, but instead through smiles, gestures, and simply being present… now I know that kindness speaks louder than anything else.”

Gokul Vaihunthan, Lasallian Scholar for Leadership, shared a moment from Blue Sky House that captured this learning: “Despite not understanding specifically what was said, I could feel their gratitude… and I could feel their gratitude for our presence. We were able to build that connection, without speaking so much, but by feeling each other’s feelings.”

Vincent’s, Lasallian Scholar for the Field of Sports, reflection captured the cumulative impact of the camp on both his understanding of service and his sense of self. He wrote, “My perception of service completely changed… Now I understand that service is connecting, presence, and giving without expectation of return of any sort.” He concluded, “Of all the powerful moments in camp, it was the strengthening of my Lasallian identity that made the greatest impact.”

Today, the need for men and women like De La Salle remains ever-present. Lasallians are challenged to recognise both their own vulnerability and that of others, and to discern their role within a society that too often excludes rather than includes.

WE ARE SIBLINGS TO ONE ANOTHER

What differentiates the Lasallian Formation Camp from other residential trips is the way it bridges values formation with lived reality—nurturing the holistic development of participants through diverse and meaningful learning experiences.

Most importantly, the camp affirms what our school song proclaims: Lasallians are siblings to one another across all walks of life. We treat one another, and all whom we encounter, as brothers and sisters. We listen to one another’s stories, and we uphold one another’s dignity.

The Lasallian Formation Camp 2025 was formative not because of scale or spectacle, but because of presence—showing up for others, working alongside them, and learning to see the world with greater attentiveness and responsibility.

As these sixth-form students prepare to graduate and move into new stages of life, they leave with more than memories. They return carrying a clearer sense of what it means to live as Lasallians: to serve with humility, to stand with those at the margins, and to recognise one another as siblings across differences. The work of formation does not end in Sangkhlabhuri; it continues wherever they choose to learn, serve, and lead.

This trip has greatly changed my understanding of the Lasallian values. This was one of the first, and certainly the most impactful, times I have been able to experience what it means to encounter the Lasallian mission as a lived reality rather than as a concept discussed in assemblies or in classrooms. I have been able to better understand the true reach of the Lasallian community and the effects it has had, and can have on the lives of anyone around the world. Through this I have come to understand that solidarity within service learning is not about swooping in to provide answers and aid, but rather recognising dignity where the world has not. It is a willingness to be changed by the people you claim to serve, and most of all, it is about standing with others, shoulder to shoulder, not because we are obliged to, but rather because we are called to see them as brothers and sisters.

To future participants of service, entering with an open mind is not what guarantees a fruitful experience because the experience itself will transform your heart and reveal a deeper understanding of humanity. From a Catholic perspective, this is my encompassing take away from this trip: I never understood why God needs worship from us and why we need to be an ‘empty vessel’ for him to utilise for the purpose of good. But I now realise what God’s purpose is for me and all humans; to serve others the way he serves us. Serving others was not meant just to benefit the receiving end. But rather, help the giver. I felt completely transformed in allowing God’s grace to lead my life.

For future participants, my advice is simple: do not treat this experience as something temporary. The impact of this camp stays with you long after you return home. Go in with an open mind and an open heart. Let yourself be changed by the people you meet. The experience is not just about helping others, it is about understanding your role within a global Lasallian family and discovering aspects of yourself you may not have known beforehand.

This trip also shaped the way I see my own future. I never expected to enjoy service this deeply, but it awakened something in me. I want to continue participating in Lasallian service, and I hope to join the next formation camp if it continues. Most importantly, this experience gave me confidence in my desire to pursue medicine. I have always wanted to help others, but this trip affirmed that this passion is real and deeply rooted in me. It helped me see the kind of person I want to become: someone who serves with compassion, humility, and purpose.

Sophie Hashim, Lasallian Scholar for Sports

My biggest takeaway from this trip is that community shouldn’t always exist within constraints of people with the same ideas, visions, lives, abilities, and languages. Communities can be created without any prerequisites. It’s always important to remember that we are all humans and all need to socialise, so inclusion of everyone within your community is really important. This trip showed me that no matter where you come from, you can always find people who make you feel at home, and holding onto those connections is essential.

This trip was the most eye-opening, enriching and fun trip I have ever been on, with almost everyone that took part deeming it as our best school experience to date. Beyond the service work we did, seeing classmates from completely different factions of our cohort last year get along was truly amazing, with us all leaving more tight-knit than ever before. The six day camp made it all the more clear to me that I would like to make service work an integral part of my life, and the great things we can do as Lasallians with the ethos and ideologies ingrained into our characters. I would advise all future participants of this trip to go in eager to learn and to embody our school values to the best of their abilities.

Some practical advice – don’t wear white-coloured shoes or socks for the trip to prevent them being covered with mud. It’s quite hard to wash off later! It was also my first time wearing a fanny pack and it was so useful just to have all of my essentials right in front of me, safe and accounted for.

If I were to give advice to future participants of this trip, I would definitely say, “go with an open mind.” Sometimes the work gets tiring and makes me want to give up, but those moments are where the real learning happens. Also, instead of waiting for instructions, taking the initiative to find ways to help makes a huge difference.

Hwaryun Shin, Lasallian Scholar for the Field of Mathematics

I would recommend all future participants to not hesitate to go on this trip: while it may seem boring and unprovoking at first glance, it is genuinely a valuable and insightful experience. Immersing yourself fully and telling yourself that your efforts will be seen, recognized and appreciated by others will quickly remove any of your physical pain or mental barriers. Being shy or reclusive is a complete mistake – only by being willing to interact with others can others open up to you, leading to a mutually fulfilling experience where both sides benefit.

Something that I would tell people that are going to go on this camp is that you will not be able to enjoy the experience and truly apply yourself and improve, without letting go of any fear, hesitation or reservation you may have, because that is the whole point of this camp: to get out of your comfort zone to immerse yourself in a completely different life to improve yourself in order to change the world.

Dear SJIIS Community,

As we step into a new year, I would like to wish all members of our community and their families a prosperous and happy 2026.

2026 is a hugely significant year for our school as it marks 10 years since we first opened our doors to students. At the start of the academic year in August, I shared a video with staff of the first time we gathered all of our students together to sing ‘We are Lasallian’. In those days, we could just about fit the entire school into our auditorium and, as a founding member of staff, I remember the moment both clearly and fondly.

As a teacher joining a brand new school, it was incredibly exciting. It was a chance to build a culture and identity from the ground up. In that session with staff at the beginning of Term 1, I also shared the careers and journeys that some of the young people singing “We are Lasallian” in that video had gone on to pursue: lawyers, doctors, neuroscientists, physicists, software engineers, AI consultants, sustainability consultants, environmentalists but, above all, I hope good people who lead in their chosen fields with heart and continue to carry our Lasallian ethos and the words ‘Enter to learn, Leave to serve’ into their chosen places of work, communities and family homes.

Whilst many of the staff who were present when we first sang We are Lasallian’ as a school community have moved on (though some do remain), for current staff who were not there in those early days of SJIIS, I wanted them to share and be part of that history of our school. History is important. It is the shared narrative of our journey that unites us and strengthens bonds between all members of our community whether leaders, teachers, administrative staff, students, parents or alumni. Of course, this is not only the shared history of our school but the shared history of all Lasallian schools around the world that continue the work of our founder St. John Baptist De La Salle.

This year, 2026, I look forward to celebrating ’10 years of teaching minds and touching hearts’ with you all and whether you are still a member of the SJIIS community or have moved on, please remember that you are and always will be a Lasallian.

I have no doubt that as we look forward to the next decade of St. Joseph’s Institution International School in Malaysia, the school will continue to prosper and develop outstanding and caring young people. I am very much excited to see what the future holds for our students and community.

This week, the SJIIS community proudly celebrated the 2025 Lasallian Scholars Awards – an event dedicated to honouring Year 12 students who represent the very best of what it means to be a Josephian. Being named a Lasallian Scholar is one of the highest recognitions a student can receive at SJIIS: it affirms not only academic excellence, but more importantly, the virtues, character, and commitment to service that lie at the heart of a Lasallian education.

Our Lasallian Scholars stand as role models in the school: students who act with integrity, demonstrate respect for all, and give their time generously in service of others. The awards celebrate those who consistently embody the Lasallian values of faith, community, humility, and compassion, and who actively work to strengthen the social and moral culture of SJIIS. Throughout their time at school, these students have lived the Lasallian call to “serve the last, the lost, and the least,” and have shown a steadfast commitment to building a cohesive and inclusive community.

The ceremony reflected this spirit beautifully. After an opening performance and blessing, families and staff witnessed the presentation of 11 awards across academic fields, leadership, and community and service. Each recipient was recognised not only for achievement, but for the virtues they have displayed daily: perseverance in learning, compassion in service, responsibility in leadership and a deep respect for others. These important qualities were echoed by some beautifully eloquent and reflective speeches from our Year 13 scholars: Kirsten Yap, David and Nathan Motha.

Scholars also shared experiences from their recent Lasallian Formation Camp, a transformative service-learning journey that further prepared them for the responsibilities that come with the title of Lasallian Scholar. Through mentorship from the Lasallian Brothers and involvement in meaningful service projects within the Lasallian East Asia District, these students will continue to contribute to the life of the school and the wider Lasallian mission in the year ahead.

As the community joined together in the closing song “We Are Lasallian”, it was clear that this cohort of scholars represents the future leaders of SJIIS – young people who will continue to guide, inspire, and uplift others through their actions.

We also celebrate Hwaryun, named Top in the World for Additional Mathematics. His outstanding result is the culmination of consistent effort, deep focus, and a genuine passion for the subject – qualities that will undoubtedly continue to guide him in his study of A Level Further Mathematics this year.

Charlotte, Ziru, and Wushang (our Top in Malaysia awardees for Art & Design, International Mathematics, and Literature in English) each embody a different facet of what it means to be a well-rounded Lasallian learner. Charlotte’s artistic vision has enriched the creative life of our school; Ziru’s mathematical talent, matched with his generosity in supporting peers, sets an inspiring example for younger students; and Wushang’s thoughtful engagement with literature reflects both intellectual curiosity and maturity beyond her years.

We are immensely proud of these students. Their accomplishments reflect not only personal dedication but also a commitment to uplifting the school community through their gifts, virtues, and leadership. They remind us of what is possible when academic ambition is grounded in purpose and service.

Ding Ziru: I was really pleased to receive the Top in Malaysia award for Cambridge International Mathematics. This definitely provides me with a source of courage and energy for the other IGCSE subjects coming next year. I would thank my Maths teachers and my parents for granting me courage and supporting me when I’m facing barriers. I can also attribute my success to the consistent work and study I put in throughout the two years of preparation.

Sumaiea: The Top in the World award for IGCSE Mandarin Foreign Language was an incredible surprise for me, especially since I come from a non-Chinese speaking background. I’m sincerely thankful to all my teachers who supported me on my journey – for their guidance and encouragement. This achievement reflects our collective hard work. I thank God for his blessings on me.

Hwaryun: There were days when Maths felt overwhelming, but I refused to let difficulty define my limits. Step by step, I built the confidence to push higher, and this award is the result of that journey. I’m truly thankful for the guidance of my teachers and the encouragement from my family and friends who constantly believed I could reach this level.

A monumental congratulations to Hwaryun, Charlotte, Wushuang, Ziru and Sumaiea for their outstanding success in the summer 2025 IGCSE examinations.

For Hwaryun and Sumaiea to achieve the highest scores globally, earning the prestigious ‘Top in the World’ recognition in their respective subjects, is a remarkable achievement for them and for St. Joseph’s Institution International School.

The duration of their internships varied. Some students completed a one-week placement that concluded on 4 July. Others remained in their roles until 11 July, while a dedicated group continued their internships until 8 August. Notably, several students undertook two distinct internships, taking a proactive step towards exploring different fields and solidifying their career aspirations.

We were proud to partner with a diverse array of leading companies, each providing unique insights into their respective industries. Our partners included: LC60 AI, Heineken Malaysia Berhad, Sunway Medical Centre Damansara, IC Design Symmid Corporation, GXY Cultin Sdn Bhd / Wing Heng Technology Sdn Bhd, Tealive, OEJ Partnership, Berjaya Corporation, Baker Tilly Malaysia, HJ Education Desapark, Malaysia National AI Office, Stand for Pie, Sony Beijing, Sodexo Group, Genesis Law (Singapore), UPM Research, and FPW Projects.

From the complexities of medical operations and cutting-edge AI development to the fast-paced world of beverage production, music, and professional accounting, “Project Connect” offered students a remarkable opportunity to explore potential career paths, acquire essential workplace skills, and gain deeper insight into various industries. This programme played a vital role in equipping students for future success and empowering them to make informed decisions about their academic and career directions.

Amisha Kaneswaran (LC60 AI)

My internship proved to be an eye-opening experience. I connected with professionals who shared similar passions, and it was inspiring to see how they had transformed their interests into thriving careers. My two supervisors provided valuable guidance on university pathways and outlined the steps I needed to take to achieve my academic and career goals.

Throughout the internship, I was introduced to job roles beyond traditional academics—many of which I had never encountered before. This broadened my understanding of the career possibilities within science and technology. I particularly enjoyed learning about satellites and the role of Python programming in space and Earth observation.

I had the chance to work on hands-on coding projects that pushed me beyond the A2 syllabus, equipping me with new Python skills and showing me how programming and data analysis are used in the real world. It also gave me insight into a typical 9 to 5 office environment.

In addition to technical skills, I developed essential soft skills such as communication and time management. Being surrounded by a motivated and supportive team boosted my confidence and encouraged me to explore previously unconsidered areas. Overall, the internship deepened my understanding of the STEM field and helped shape a clearer vision of the career I wish to pursue.

Braeden Eng (Heineken Malaysia Berhad)

During my internship at Heineken, I was placed in the Trade Marketing team under the Sales division, with the role of Channel Operations Intern. I supported the team with a range of operational tasks and gained valuable insight into the workings of different trade channels. The experience provided me with meaningful exposure to how sales and marketing functions operated in a multinational corporation, and how these departments collaborated to achieve business objectives.

David Glen Motha, Gosia Blake, Iris Ang & Ian Wong
(Sunway Medical Centre Damansara)

During our internship at Sunway Medical Centre, we gained valuable insight into the medical profession and its challenges. We shadowed doctors from various specialities and observed how they interacted with patients first-hand.

Filipp Tyurin (IC Design Symmid Corporation)

The company I interned with specialised in computer processor development. They walked me through their entire workflow, from design and manufacturing to sales. I also took a short course on Linux and learnt how to use command-line tools, as Linux was the operating system used for chip design.

It was a highly educational experience. My daily schedule was 9 am to 5 pm, aligning with what I had imagined a typical office routine to be. Observing the consistency and dedication of the employees gave me a strong appreciation for the demands of working life.

While I may not wish to follow this exact routine in the future, I was grateful for the opportunity to experience it. It allowed me to explore various work environments and gain clarity on what suits me best. I am thankful for the knowledge and perspective this experience offered.

Hinako Kobayashi (GXY Cultin Sdn Bhd / Wing Heng Technology Sdn Bhd)

In the first week, I worked on preparing essential documents to help international customers understand E-Invoices and how the company could assist them. I applied many of the skills I had acquired in school, particularly in IT, business, and languages. My Chinese language skills proved especially useful, as I created all the documents in Chinese.

This task taught me the importance of understanding client needs and tailoring information to suit those requirements.

Katelyn Teh (OEJ Partnership)

Though my tasks as an intern were limited, I was able to learn through observation and discussions with experienced colleagues. I developed my research skills, resilience, and adaptability to new challenges.

Kirsten Yap (Berjaya Corporation)

While the internship was not directly related to my future plans, it offered valuable insights into working life and encouraged me to think creatively. I was fortunate to have a kind and supportive supervisor and team, who assigned me meaningful tasks rather than mundane duties like photocopying.

I encountered challenges, such as reading the company’s annual report and struggling to understand some aspects, but I embraced the learning curve. I looked forward to continuing my development during this and my next internship.

Preisha Kaur Jammu (HJ Education Desapark & MBSB Bank)

During my internship at MBSB Bank, I gained valuable insight into the operations of various departments and the significance of teamwork and professionalism within a corporate environment. Although much of my role was observational, I learnt a great deal by shadowing staff, attending meetings, and witnessing how theoretical knowledge translated into real-world practice. The experience reinforced my interest in finance and provided clarity on the specific skills I wished to develop further.

Nathan Glen Motha

Completing an internship as part of the Year 12 programme was a truly enriching experience. I appreciated the chance to gain real-world exposure, learn new skills both relevant to my field and useful in daily life, such as commuting via MRT, taking meeting minutes, and writing research reports. I also expanded my knowledge in computer science, which I planned to include in my personal statement. I was especially thankful to Ms Quennie for her constant support.

Te Jien Swee (Stand for Pie Me)

During my internship at Stand Pie Me, I gained a number of valuable insights, having previously interned with the company when it operated from a shophouse rather than the café it had since established.

I developed a deeper understanding of individuals with neurodiversity and found that I could even relate to them in several ways. I observed how the management at Stand Pie Me both employed and supported them, and I learnt how to communicate more effectively despite not being naturally talkative.

I also acquired practical skills such as basic accounting and the process of hand-producing food items. Whilst I do not intend to pursue a career in the food and beverage industry, these skills and experiences may prove useful in broadening my overall understanding in the future.

Zining Law (FPW Projects)

During my architecture internship, I created a physical moodboard, undertook research projects, and sourced material samples from various companies, which strengthened my negotiation skills under tight deadlines. I also learnt to use 3D software to produce architectural drawings and participated in team meetings to better understand workflow processes and improve my communication. Visiting the construction site provided me with hands-on experience of the complexities of construction. In addition, I built valuable professional connections that I believe will be beneficial in the future.

Summer Internship (Mid-July to August)

Julia Doraisamy (Genesis Law Firm, Singapore)

My internship provided me with the opportunity to work on real-world cases and offered a valuable introduction to the legal field. The lawyers were welcoming and provided constructive feedback on my work, which enabled me to learn, improve, and gain confidence in my abilities.

Jaden San (UPM & KBM)

I interned at Universiti Putra Malaysia for three weeks alongside a group of PhD and Master’s students conducting research in stem cell therapy. I observed and practised several laboratory techniques commonly used in biomedical science, including tissue staining, microtomy, and dissection, and I worked with specialised software to analyse light microscope images of tissue samples.

Subsequently, I undertook a second internship at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia for one week and one day under the guidance of a PhD student researching bioinks for wound dressings. I prepared and carried out basic material tests on gelatin biomaterial blocks and observed advanced techniques such as cell cryo-preservation and 3D bioprinting. This experience also enhanced my understanding of the product development pipeline in biomedical engineering and provided me with valuable insight into the structure of a biomaterials PhD programme.

Second Internship (End of July)

Gosia Blake and David Glen Motha (Sodexo)

During my one-week internship at Sodexo’s Malaysia headquarters, I gained valuable insight into workplace dynamics and employee engagement, which helped me understand why human resources is integral to a productive organisation. My primary task was to interview all members of the Malaysia–Singapore HR department, investigating engagement and relationships between colleagues. Conducting eighteen semi-structured interviews pushed me out of my comfort zone, strengthened my confidence, and allowed me to apply critical thinking in analysing each employee’s situation. I directed my questions to identify the root causes of workplace dissatisfaction, which sharpened both my problem-solving and communication skills.

The final objective of the internship was to present a report to the Chief Human Resources Officer of Sodexo APMEA. After compiling extensive handwritten notes into statistics and infographics, we delivered a successful presentation. Knowing that the report would be used to inform new company projects was especially rewarding and made all the hard work worthwhile. This formative experience significantly influenced my decision to consider a career path. – David

During my one-week internship at Sodexo Malaysia, I was tasked with identifying internal HR challenges. Working with a classmate, I conducted targeted interviews with the Malaysia and Singapore HR teams, developing on-the-spot questions to probe into leadership and operational issues.

After analysing the data, I co-created and presented a findings report to senior leadership. This opportunity enhanced my professional interviewing and analytical skills and provided me with direct exposure to corporate HR functions. I enjoyed the dynamic, problem-solving environment and discovered a strong personal interest in pursuing corporate work. – Gosia

As a founding member of staff, I’ve had the immense privilege of watching these students grow into the remarkable young people they are today. The graduating A Level, IGCSE, and final IBDP cohorts have not only achieved outstanding academic results but have also lived the core values of SJIIS.

In my 20 years as an educator, I have never worked with students quite like those at St. Joseph’s. They are driven, ambitious, and committed to academic excellence, but they are also humble and dedicated to serving others, both within and beyond our community. They are fantastic role models for their peers and a testament to the dedication of their parents and teachers, and the vibrant school culture that has helped shape them.

On the remarkable weekend of April 18 and 19, 63 talented students from St. Joseph’s Institution International School showcased their skills at the World Scholar’s Cup competition held at BSKL. Competing against an impressive pool of 800 participants, our students triumphed, securing victory in both the Junior and Senior divisions!

The outstanding Junior Division team comprised of Daniel Tan, Xyn Yii Ho, and John Lee, all from Year 9, displayed remarkable teamwork and intellect. In the Senior Division, our mixed team featuring Ayleen Eng from Year 9 and Jin Yang Leow from Year 10 proved their mettle by rising to the challenge against competitors as old as 18. These students were not just tested on a demanding curriculum; they also excelled in debating and writing, showcasing their versatility and prowess.

Daniel Tan’s exceptional performance earned him the prestigious Top Scholar award in the Junior Division. Meanwhile, Ayleen Eng and Jin Yang Leow distinguished themselves as top ten scholars in the Senior Division, a feat that speaks volumes about their hard work and dedication.

Our student’s accomplishments didn’t stop there; two of our Year 7 teams made incredible strides by securing spots in the Top 10 overall teams in the Junior Division, despite being first-time competitors at such a young age.

Building on this momentum, we are now eagerly preparing for the Global Round, followed by the highly anticipated Tournament of Champions at Yale University in November. With such a strong foundation and outstanding talent, the future is bright for SJIIS!

During the trip, students explored a captivating array of renowned landmarks that highlighted Chengdu’s rich heritage and contemporary culture. They visited Huanglongxi Ancient Town, an enchanting glimpse into history, and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, an engineering marvel that showcases ancient ingenuity. The Sanxingdui Museum unveiled fascinating artefacts from ancient civilisations, while Wuhou Shrine offered insight into historical figures of significance. Chunxi Road and Chengdu 798 – Eastern Suburb Memory showcased modern cultural vibrancy, while the charming Kuanzhai Alleys and the lively Jinli Pedestrian Street provided a taste of local life. Each location not only enriched their understanding but also celebrated the dynamic tapestry of Chengdu’s past and present.

One of the standout moments of the trip was our visit to the Sichuan Cuisine Museum. There, students delved into the captivating history of Sichuan food culture. They engaged in a hands-on culinary experience, learning to craft beloved local dishes like Kung Pao Chicken and delightful panda-shaped dumplings. It was a flavorful adventure filled with fun and creativity! And, of course, no trip to Chengdu would be complete without indulging in the renowned mala hotpot — a spicy, numbing delicacy that left an indelible mark on everyone’s taste buds!

Another remarkable experience was attending a live Sichuan Opera performance, where we witnessed the stunning face-changing (变脸) technique in action. Additionally, students were given the incredible opportunity to don traditional opera costumes, immersing themselves in the elegance and artistry that define this extraordinary cultural heritage.

The students had the unique chance to become “panda keepers for a day,” where they actively participated in preparing bamboo, bamboo leaves, and traditional steamed corn buns (窝窝头) for the giant pandas. This exceptional experience not only allowed them to engage hands-on with these magnificent creatures but also fostered a profound appreciation for panda conservation and their daily lives.

The cultural exchange with Shuangliu Middle School in Chengdu was undoubtedly one of the most memorable experiences of the trip. Engaging in interactive activities and heartfelt interactions, students created lasting connections, showcased their unique cultures, and significantly broadened their global outlook.

This journey to Chengdu seamlessly combined history, culture, delicious cuisine, camaraderie, and enjoyment. It provided students with not just valuable insights but also unforgettable memories of an enriching and inspiring cultural adventure.

Chew, Jun Renn – Year 8Y, My trip to Chengdu was incredible, filled with rich history and culture. The highlight was the pandas; learning about them and smashing bamboo for their enjoyment was thrilling, even if we couldn’t touch them. Shopping in Chengdu was fun too, allowing me to spend quality time with friends. The food was a delicious adventure, with unique flavours that captivated my taste buds. Overall, my experience was unforgettable, and I look forward to returning for more!

Lee, Chin Yee (Amber) – Year 8K, My experience on the Chengdu trip highlighted the rich differences in culture and education between Malaysia and China. Visiting the school was truly enlightening; I witnessed firsthand their unique learning environment and the vibrant educational atmosphere that sets it apart.

The event highlighted the remarkable efforts of our sixth-form students, who planned and implemented thirteen (13) impactful projects that significantly benefited the local community. From creating interactive learning experiences in STEM and financial literacy to promoting inclusivity through sports and wellness initiatives, the De La Salle Service-Learning awards programme of SJIIS encouraged students to apply their learning to serve others, especially the last, the lost, and the least. These projects had a tangible and positive effect on our local community, addressing real-world challenges such as refugee empowerment, environmental sustainability, gender-based violence, and neurodiversity.

These projects, besides making a tangible, real-world impact and being a force for the common good, also played a significant role in the holistic learning and character development of our students. Their active participation allowed them to hone essential life skills such as research, interpersonal communication, public speaking, and financial literacy, while also fostering their empathy and sense of responsibility to the world around them. This personal growth is a testament to their dedication and the transformative power of service-learning.

Ezra Lim, who was honored with the Outstanding Reflection Award from the Year 13 cohort, shared his profound reflections on the experience. He expressed that the journey instilled in him a “deep sense of gratitude” and a realisation to use his “privileges to serve those who are less fortunate”. He also highlighted that “the experience was also a lesson in empathy”, teaching him that “service is about fostering personal interactions and empowerment, rather than dispensing aid without knowing its value.” These reflections provide a deep insight into the transformative power of service-learning.

Julia Doraisamy, Outstanding Reflection Paper Awardee from Year 12, reflected on her service-learning journey and related it to her religious background, stating that: “As a Catholic, the skill of sewing, the knowledge of the political situation in Afghanistan, and the valuable lesson the organisation has taught me about women’s resilience have given me a more aware but optimistic perspective that God has plans to improve these women’s lives.”

Three outstanding projects were awarded for their relevance to the community, exceptional impact, practical application of learning, and connection to the Lasallian education principle of Concern for the Poor and Social Justice. Awardees received a medal with the image of St. John Baptist de La Salle and a certificate recognising their outstanding contribution to service-learning. In addition, the community partners of the most exceptional service-learning projects received RM6,000 (Gold), RM5,000 (Silver), and RM4,000 (Bronze). These awards were judged by an international panel of judges, each with extensive experience in community engagement, youth formation, and working with non-governmental organisations in Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Italy. The judging process was rigorous and comprehensive, ensuring that only the most deserving projects were recognized.

The Gold Award—The Bio Buddies (Y12) received the highest recognition. The group partnered with Ruth Education Centre, a UNHCR-registered education centre that aims to educate Myanmar refugee youth, and organised a science fair showcasing engaging experiments such as DNA extraction, chromatography-based mystery-solving, chemical reactions, and balloon-powered car challenges. They were followed by the Silver Award—Monkey Sea, Monkey Do (Y13), who partnered with The Sea Monkeys Project and hosted an environmental workshop raising awareness of plastic pollution and promoting sustainable habits through creative upcycling techniques. The Bronze Awardees, the Sharks (Y12), also collaborated with the REC and facilitated a business workshop introducing pitch ideas and identification, budgeting, and entrepreneurship concepts, culminating in a “Shark Tank” style competition where participants pitched innovative ideas.

In his remarks, Brother Mico de Leon FSC Lasallian Education Teacher, encouraged all our sixth-form Lasallians “to carry the school’s values forward and continue being role models for our younger students, like their older brothers and sisters, setting a great example for them to follow.” He further mentioned that their service-learning projects are their legacy, “but it doesn’t end here. Take what you’ve learned, and let it shape how you lead, serve, and make an impact in the world.”

We are excited to announce that our talented students – Eugene Rhee, Jingyi Wu (Jenny), and Wushuang Lou (Shine) – have achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the Best in Malaysia 2024 award at the prestigious Cambridge Upper Secondary Science Competition. Their “How to Minimize Microplastic Released from Synthetic Fabrics During Washing” project showcased their exceptional scientific inquiry, teamwork, and commitment to addressing real-world environmental challenges.

The competition provided a platform for young minds to explore global issues through scientific investigation, and our students rose to the challenge with outstanding dedication. Their project focused on the pressing issue of microplastic pollution caused by synthetic fabrics, particularly in the context of the fast fashion industry. The team examined the impact of fabric types, dye pH levels, and detergent choices on microplastic release during washing through meticulous research and experimentation.

Their investigation included the following:

• Analysing seven different fabric types to understand how synthetic fibres degrade during washing.
• Exploring the effects of natural and chemical detergents, highlighting the environmental benefits of enzyme-based detergents.
• Studying how dyeing fabrics at different pH levels affects microplastic shedding and identifying optimal conditions to minimise pollution.

The judges commended Eugene, Jenny, and Shine for their work’s depth, relevance, and scientific rigour, describing it as “a brilliant project tackling a global concern.” While noting the impressive scope of their study, the judges also highlighted the team’s ability to present robust conclusions based on quantitative data.

This achievement reflects the students’ passion for science, creativity in problem- solving, and determination to contribute to a sustainable future. Their success was not only a result of their hard work but also of their collaborative spirit. Each team member played a crucial role, ensuring their efforts were well-coordinated and impactful.
