SJIIS Virtues Project™ – Beyond the Classroom
At SJIIS, we are incredibly proud of how beautifully our community has embraced the Virtues Project™ and woven it into every aspect of school life, as well as into the relationships and connections within our homes.
As an accredited Virtues Project school, SJIIS has been awarded the highest “Exemplary” standard in recognition of our deep and authentic commitment to embedding the Virtues throughout our school culture and community.
The Virtues Project is the silver thread that runs through our Character Education programme in the Elementary School. It underpins the way we teach, guide, celebrate, and care for one another, helping to shape a culture where every child feels valued, supported, and inspired to flourish.
The Virtues Project™ gives us a shared language to celebrate our children’s successes, guide them through challenges, and strengthen the relationships that matter most. Through the five Virtues strategies, our teachers intentionally weave character development into the curriculum, restorative practices, classroom interactions, assemblies, and the everyday moments that make up a child’s school experience. At St. Joseph’s, children learn virtues not only through lessons but through the example, language, and relationships they encounter each day with teachers and peers.
The first strategy, The Language of the Virtues, reminds us that words have the power to either discourage or inspire. At SJIIS, we intentionally use language to acknowledge effort, guide behaviour, encourage reflection, and celebrate growth. Our compliments are thoughtful and specific because we believe that meaningful encouragement helps every child to flourish and grow in confidence. Recognising virtues such as kindness, courage, diligence, compassion, and respect awakens the very best within each child and reminds us of the kind of people we strive to become each day.
The second strategy, Teachable Moments, helps children recognise and apply virtues when navigating everyday challenges and conflicts. These moments encourage reflection, empathy, and personal responsibility while reminding us all that character development is a lifelong journey. Whether children are learning flexibility during times of change, patience in friendships, or resilience through challenges, the Virtues provide a framework that helps them grow with wisdom and self-awareness.
The third strategy, Setting Clear Boundaries, is grounded in respect, restorative justice, and accountability. Clear boundaries create a climate of safety, trust, cooperation, and peace within our classrooms and wider community. In our classrooms, you will see Talking Corners where children independently work through disagreements using restorative language and problem-solving skills. Through these experiences, children learn that conflict can be resolved respectfully and relationships can be repaired with honesty, empathy, and understanding.
The final two strategies, Honoring the Spirit and Spiritual Companioning, teach children the importance of presence, deep listening, and compassionate curiosity. These practices nurture emotional well-being and strengthen relationships by helping children feel heard, understood, and supported. They encourage children to seek clarity, reflect thoughtfully, and discover solutions within themselves while also learning how to support others with kindness and care.
Through the Virtues, we continue to nurture a warm, restorative, and inclusive learning community where every child is valued, supported, and recognised as the unique and extraordinary individual they are. Over the years, we have seen the Virtues Project uplift and inspire our entire community. It has strengthened relationships, enriched wellbeing, and helped create a culture where children feel happier, more confident, and deeply connected to those around them.
As Lasallians, we truly believe that “what is best for our students has everything to do with what is best within them.” The 52 Virtues are like precious gems hidden within each child. As educators at SJIIS, it is our privilege to nurture, guide, and gently polish those gems so that every child can shine brightly and become the very best version of themselves.
The Mole Family: Since joining St. Joseph’s, we have been thoroughly impressed with the school’s commitment to the Virtues Project, which encourages all students to strive towards becoming their best selves. Witnessing the direct impact of this project on our own children has been heartwarming. Amelia and Maya have embraced the virtues they’ve learned, particularly cooperation, courtesy, kindness, and determination. It is truly inspiring to work in an environment that fosters these crucial qualities, providing the necessary support for our young people to thrive.
Doraisamy Family: During this year, our children have grown in confidence and consideration through the guidance and encouragement from their teachers and peers, and through the service learning opportunities led by the brothers. Also, we as a family have enjoyed learning and practising the 52 virtues at home. Thanks to the virtues workshops extended to parents at school.
Tyurin Family: Our main criterion was the school spirit, and St. Joseph School is absolutely unbeatable here. The final decision to join was made after talking to Ms Sahana Fried about the Virtues Project and Mr Gary Cairns, who explained about the teaching attitude and the purpose-oriented approach. We are happy that we made the right decision in choosing the Lasallian school for our children.
David Collier (Teacher): “The material was clear, practical, and meaningful, and the way you guided us through it helped me genuinely feel the impact of placing virtues at the centre of our community. To be honest, it felt more connecting and authentic than almost every team-building activity I’ve experienced in the last twenty years.”
I want to congratulate you on St. Joseph’s receiving the Exemplary acknowledgement from The Virtues Project™—what a beautiful achievement. I know that it is your dedication—your perseverance and hard work in bringing the virtues to life across the school community. Mojgan Tosif – Master Facilitator of The Virtues Project™
