Read Write Inc. at Our School
At our school, we are proud to deliver Read Write Inc., a highly regarded UK-based, structured phonics programme that gives children the strongest possible start in reading, writing and spelling.
Read Write Inc. is a systematic, evidence-based approach developed in the UK and used successfully by thousands of schools worldwide. It teaches children to read fluently and confidently by combining phonics, comprehension, writing, and speaking and listening in a clear, structured, and engaging way.
A Strong Start from Nursery to Year 2
Children’s journey with phonics begins early at our school. In Nursery, children start to become familiar with initial sounds during Term 3, building strong foundations through playful, language-rich experiences. From Reception through to Year 2, Read Write Inc. is taught daily, ensuring consistency, pace, and high-quality instruction across the early years.
Carefully Matched Progress Groups
Children are taught in small, carefully matched progress groups, typically around 12 pupils. This ensures teaching is precisely matched to each child’s current level, allowing them to be both supported and challenged appropriately. Groups are fluid and flexible, enabling children to move quickly through the programme as they progress.
Regular Assessment and Clear Communication with Parents
Assessment is a key strength of our Read Write Inc. implementation. Children are assessed every six weeks, and groups are adjusted accordingly to ensure rapid progress. Following each assessment cycle, parents receive clear, detailed information about:
- the sounds their child has mastered,
- the sounds they are currently learning,
- and the next steps in their phonics journey.
Children take home colour-matched Read Write Inc. books, so they practise reading texts that closely align with what they are learning in school, building confidence and fluency.
Expert Training and Outstanding Teaching
Read Write Inc. was introduced to our school in August 2025, following extensive preparation. All relevant staff completed over 16 hours of training led by UK-based Read Write Inc. experts, alongside follow-up development days and ongoing professional learning.
Our Read Write Inc. Lead, Olivia Harper, is present in lessons daily, modelling, co-teaching, mentoring staff and ensuring consistency and quality across every group. Teaching is reviewed weekly, with a strong focus on coaching and continuous improvement.
All staff receive weekly Read Write Inc. training sessions, where they practise together, refine delivery, and ensure the programme is taught with fidelity and confidence.
Rapid Progress and Targeted Support
We have seen significant improvements in children’s progress, with 97% of pupils making expected or above-expected progress, in line with UK standards.
Children who need additional support are identified quickly and receive one-to-one tutoring from trained Read Write Inc. tutors, including members of our senior leadership team. This ensures no child is left behind and support is put in place immediately.
Every half term, staff meet for progress meetings led by the Read Write Inc. Lead to review data, regroup pupils, and refine teaching priorities.
Beyond Phonics
When children complete the phonics programme, they move on to Read Write Inc. Comprehension, followed by a bespoke transition programme designed to prepare them confidently for Year 3. This ensures continuity, depth, and long-term success in reading.
A Programme Children Love
Children genuinely enjoy Read Write Inc. sessions — from meeting Fred the Frog to celebrating their reading success. This enjoyment, combined with clear structure and expert teaching, creates confident, motivated readers.
We also work closely with families, running regular parent workshops to support reading at home. These sessions are extremely well attended and have received overwhelmingly positive feedback.
